Step-by-Step Outline
Work in Progress
I will break this page down into “clips” and say what will happen in each clip. This is only a rough initial thought though currently. It could well change dramatically.
- (audio only) Police interviewing character. Character (lets call him Shayne for now) starts to describe events (this could very well be cut, depending on whether the story can explain itself or not)
- Couple of people playing frisbee, Shayne talks to them while filming (so that the audience know they are friends and that the camera is being controlled by him) One of them says “check this out” but Shayne explains that the camera can only film 10 seconds at a time, so wait up and he’ll film on a new “clip”
- Cool frisbee trick with a small girl in the background.
- Tomfoolery involving Shayne trying to point the camera up his girlfriend’s skirt (or something along those lines, to show that the 2 are a couple)
- Shayne trying to take a group photo but then realising the camera is still on video mode (to show the audience it’s just a basic point and shoot digicam)
- Still photo of the group photo (to set up early that the audience sees what is stored on the camera) with “the girl” subtly in the background.
- Filming one of the friends juggling. In the background the girl is there again but not noticed really. If any audience members see her, they will notice that she is moving more quickly than you’d expect, and seems to be jumping from place to place.
- Filming some of the friends sat down. They don’t seem to enjoy being filmed. They say they’re going home cos its cold, but Shayne wants to stay another 20 mins so he can take some photos of the sun setting.
- The friends are all gone, but Shayne’s girlfriend stays with him, awww :)
- Shayne films the sun while walking backwards. His girlfriend walks past to end up behind him, as does the little girl from earlier, milliseconds before the girlfriend screams SHAYNE!!!! Camera pans round quickly and sees a car swerving out of the way in the direction of the girlfriend + girl, just before the clip cuts out. Uncomfortably long black pause while audience think “yikes, what just happened?!”.
- Shayne, girlfriend and friends at a house party (audience relieved)
- Random party shenanigans – drinking, dancing, etc
- People starting to get annoyed at being constantly filmed. Ask Shayne to take some proper photos instead to put on Facebook.
- Series of photographs flashing through fairly quickly. The last photo in the batch stays on ever so slightly longer and there is a small girl on the sofa.
- Camera then picked up by Shayne’s friend, who films Shayne and gives a little commentary (taking the piss) on how Shayne saw a creepy ghost girl on the photo review screen but that now conveniently the photo isn’t showing up on the display. (letting the audience see Shayne allows them to empathise more with him since they can see him as well as “see through his eyes”) Shayne says “stfu” and demands the camera back. Just as the camera is about to be passed over there is a scream. The camera pans quickly again to the window, where it cuts off just after a glimpse of a girls face is seen through the window. (Just enough for the audience to notice, but not enough for them to study) – this may need to be split into 2 clips depending on length
- Close-up of a small hand-print on the window with someone at the party putting their hand up beside it to show the size difference clearly – it must have been a small child. People are muttering under their breath about it being weird and that.
- Webcam footage in bedroom. Girlfriend getting changed into PJs in background, Shayne at his computer screen. He explains how he’s setting it up because he’s sure someone is playing tricks on him and he wants to catch them in the act. The webcam is grainy once the lights are off and the frame rate is about 1fps. Footage seems to fast forward through a bit of rumpy-pumpy and some restless tossing and turning. Then it slows back down to normal speed and a girl just appears. She is extra fuzzy (some kind of editing effect) and moves around in a weird way. Then she just disappears along with the girlfriend
- After a black pause, the webcam footage reappears but it’s clearly the following morning. Shayne is recording a video blog, half worried that his girlfriend is gone, half scared, and half annoyed that the practical joke has gone too far. (Okay, so three halves, whatever! hehe). He mentions that there must have been a powercut over-night since he couldn’t find any of the footage he thought he’d recorded with the webcam. He seems to be distracted by something off-camera, and gets up and walks off. The shot is held for a long time, but he doesn’t come back. Cut.
- Back to the police interview, which is now over. There is some mumbled discussion as another officer comes in. None of the evidence that has been described could be found on the camera.
- Shot of the ceiling for about 6/7 seconds, then you see a hand reach in and pick the camera up, and just before the 10 second cut-off occurs, you see the face of the little girl. (this doesn’t actually make sense as how did the camera start recording? Mystic energy? Dramatic effects wins over logic however)

[...] just finished writing up a step-by-step list of what happens in my film ready for tomorrow’s first meeting/script-writing session. [...]
